It was my third encounter…My temperature was rising as high as 41 deg. I supposed to enjoy my KTV session that night. It had been a year since I went to PartyWorld. Sigh! I was freezing cold that night…I felt very ill. Hence, I decided to go home. I was shivering in the cab. My hands were clenching very tightly. Minutes seemed like hours. I looked forward for home. I wept when I saw my hubby, waiting anxiously for me at the corridor. I hid under the blanket, shivering…I didn’t manage to walk over to see Adriel, as I felt very ill. Hubby tested my temperature…it was 41.6 deg. He called my mum-in-law over to look after Adriel while he was preparing me to the hospital. I was wheeled-chair into the consultation room. Damn it! I was so pissed off with the doctor.
Our conversation went on as follows:
Doctor was about to inject me…
Sickly Me: Doctor, is this safe for breastfeeding?
#@?% Doc: No, you have to stop for a week.
Sickly Me: Why? I think I know my condition. This is my third encounter. I went to KK hospital during my 1st encounter and the doctor permitted me to continue breastfeed.
#@?% Doc: If anything happens, then KK hospital has to bear the responsibility because your infection may transmit to the baby through your breastmilk.
Sickly Me: Is that so? But but….previously my gynae also permitted me to breastfeed during my 2nd encounter. I just want to check if I'm having dengue.
#@?% Doc: There is no way for me to check…unless this is the 5th day.
Sickly Me: If I want to continue breastfeeding…are there any alternatives to bring down my fever?
#@?% Doc: What you want me to do since you reject the injection? (sounded so unprofessional) I have to perform a surgery. Why not you go outside and consider if you want the injection.
For goodness sake, I was having a high fever…ok! Ask me to wait…Damn it!
Sickly Me: In this case, I wish to seek a second opinion.
Hubby then rushed me to KK hospital. And, I was referred to a lactation consultant. It was a painful experience. At least, I was able to continue breastfeed Adriel. The nurse told me that even though there was an infection, fever or whatsoever, it was still advisable to continue breastfeed. My body would then produce more antibiotics and this would be good for the child. I felt so guilty and I cried in the hospital. Because of my health, I didn’t manage to take care of Adriel…Thank God that it was a Saturday. I reached home at 3am. Adriel was asleep then. My mum-in-law told me that Adriel was crying and went to sleep only at 1am. I felt so bad. Now, I’m trying very hard to restore my milk supply. It has affected me greatly, as I can’t provide Adriel enough of my breastmilk. As a mother…I’m persisting…enduring…May God watch over my health!
